Why Write a Covering Letter

The Covering Letter shows the employer your ability to communicate.
It reveals how well you can express yourself on paper. Your language, your dictum....etc. Thus it provides you a medium of presenting yourself favourably to your prospective employer.

Some Useful Hints while writing cover letter:

  • A covering letter should draw employers to your resume.
  • Keep it brief; Nobody likes to read volumes!
  • It should be tailored to the position and company to which you are applying.
  • Begin by writing about where you heard about the opportunity .
  • Be sure to mention why you think you are best fit for the position mentioned. If you think you are suitable for more than one skill set which the employer wants from the employee, then you should mention those skills in your letter and say how you exemplify them. Highlight the skills that will set you apart from other candidates.
  • Refer the employer to your resume, for example, "you can see from my resume that I have the experience you are looking for" may be a good way to do so.
  • Always sign your covering letter.
  • Also always note "enclosure" or "enc." several lines after your signature because your resume is enclosed.

Sample Cover Letter

Mr XYZ
CEO
Company name
Address
Dear Mr XYZ,

The Programmer's position described in your recent Daily Record advertisement immediately caught my attention. My proven track record working for a software development firm makes me an ideal candidate for the job, and I have enclosed my resume for your consideration. You will find that my qualifications more than meet your requirements.

Example, You specify that you are looking for someone with knowledge in Inventory control system. While completing my college project I worked for my university's inventory control system. While there I handled the flow and track for all the required material, and also maintained the level for the very important stationery.

I look forward to discussing the position with you in more detail. If you feel that my qualifications are as much a match as I feel they are, please call me at your earliest convenience to schedule an interview. I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
John
